The SEAI Grant Explained
The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) offers a grant towards the cost of a solar PV system for homeowners, worth up to €1,800 depending on system size. As an SEAI registered installer, we apply for this grant on your behalf and it’s deducted directly from your invoice, so you never have to chase paperwork or wait on a reimbursement.
What’s included when you go solar with DNL:

- 0% VAT on solar panel installations, in place since May 2023 for qualifying residential systems
- BER (Building Energy Rating) update, arranged as part of your installation

Battery Storage: Get More From Your System
A solar panel only generates power when there’s daylight, but your home doesn’t stop using electricity at 4pm. A battery stores the power you generate during the day so you can use it in the evening, instead of exporting it for a smaller payment or drawing more expensive electricity from the grid overnight.
Battery storage is worth considering if:
- You’re often out of the house during the day and home in the evening
- You’re on a day/night electricity tariff
- You want to maximise self-use of your own solar power rather than exporting

Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Ireland?
Most homes don’t. Domestic solar panel installations are generally exempt from planning permission under Irish exempted development regulations, provided the panels don’t protrude more than a set height above the roofline and the total panel area stays within the exempted limits. Protected structures and some apartment blocks can be exceptions. We’ll check this for your property as part of your free assessment.
Will solar panels actually work in Irish winter?
Yes. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not direct heat or sunshine, so they still produce power on overcast days. Generation is naturally higher in summer with longer daylight hours, but a well-designed system keeps working right through the year.
How much does a solar PV system cost?
It depends on your roof size, system size, and whether you add a battery. Every quote is based on your own roof, not a generic price list. Your free assessment gives you a proper number, and the SEAI grant and 0% VAT are applied before you see a final figure.
How long does installation take?
Most domestic installations take 1 to 2 days from start to finish, once your quote is confirmed and the grant paperwork is in.
Do I still get an electricity bill once I have solar?
Yes, but a smaller one. Solar reduces how much electricity you draw from the grid, and any surplus you export earns a payment through the Clean Export Guarantee. You stay connected to the grid for when your panels aren’t generating, such as at night.
What happens if a panel or the inverter develops a fault?
